What is laser hair removal?
A long-lasting solution so you no longer have to shave or wax all the time. The laser doesn't remove hair at the skin's surface; it quiets the hair follicle (the root) under your skin so that no new hair grows from it.
What I work with: Elysion Pro
The Elysion Pro is a diode laser used in professional salons, not a home device. Its handpiece has a built-in cooling system that continuously cools your skin during treatment, so it feels warm and prickly rather than painful. It can be used safely all year round, even in summer, and on almost every skin type, from fair to darker (Fitzpatrick I–V) tones.
How does it work?
The laser emits short pulses of light that only target the dark pigment in the hair (melanin). The light heats the follicle enough to destroy it, and from then on no hair grows back there. Nothing happens to the surrounding skin: the light only "sees" the hair, not the lighter skin.
Unlike IPL (the flash-lamp devices used in some salons and at home), laser is more precise and gentler. IPL works with scattered light that also heats the surrounding skin, and it is only safe on fair skin in the cooler months. Laser, on the other hand, works for every skin type and all year round.
Is it really permanent?
The honest answer: a follicle the laser destroys will never grow hair again. But your body isn't static. Years later, mainly due to hormonal changes (pregnancy, motherhood, age), previously "dormant" follicles can wake up.
That's why I describe laser as a long-lasting, near-permanent solution. Some of my clients have forgotten about hair for life, others find a maintenance session every few years useful.
Does it hurt?
Not really. It feels more like a warm, prickly sensation on your skin. The handpiece has built-in cooling that protects your skin throughout, which is why most of my clients find it more comfortable than waxing. Mild redness or swelling can occur afterwards, but it fades on its own within a few hours.
How many sessions, and how often?
Long-lasting results usually take 8-12 sessions, repeated every 4-6 weeks.
The reason is that your hair is in three different growth phases at any one time, and the laser can only reach follicles that are actively growing. At any given moment that's roughly 20-25% of all your hair. During the few weeks' break the other follicles "come forward", and we treat those at the next session.
The first appointment starts with a short consultation where I check your skin and hair type and we talk through what to expect. The consultation is free.
After the first few sessions you'll notice hair growing back slower and sparser, and the final result comes together by the end of the full course. Between treatments feel free to shave as often as you like, just don't wax or epilate: those pull the follicle out, leaving nothing for the laser to work on.
After completing the course, a maintenance session every one and a half to two years is usually worthwhile.
What to do before and after treatment
For the laser to give the best result and for your skin to tolerate it well, there are a few things worth sticking to in the days before treatment and for a day or two afterwards. Nothing complicated: shave, use sunscreen, and keep heat away from your skin.
Before treatment
- Shave the area to be treated the day before
- No sunbathing or self-tanner for two weeks
- No cream, deodorant or perfume on the morning of treatment: I need clean, dry skin to work on
- Let me know in advance if you take any medication, especially photosensitising ones
- No waxing or epilating for 4 weeks before treatment. The follicle has to be in place, otherwise there's nothing for me to target.
After treatment (24-48 hours)
- No sunbathing, tanning beds or self-tanner
- Skip sauna, steam room, hot tub and hot showers
- Skip workouts and anything that makes you sweat for these two days
- No strong perfume or deodorant on the treated skin
- During the course, shaving only: put the wax and epilator away
- If you go out in the sun, use at least SPF 30 on the treated area for two weeks
Who is it not suitable for?
There are a few cases where I can't do the treatment, or where we need to wait for the right time. We can talk everything through at the consultation, and if you're unsure about anything, just ask.
- During pregnancy and breastfeeding
- After a fresh tan or sunbathing, wait at least 2 weeks
- While taking photosensitising medication (e.g. certain antibiotics; for Roaccutane or Aknenormin, 6 months after the last dose)
- I don't treat over tattoos, but around them is fine
- Active herpes, inflamed acne, wounds or sunburn on the area to be treated
- Autoimmune disease, during chemotherapy or radiotherapy
- Moles are covered during treatment
